What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. In 1914, Matiji Kawakami, a Japanese therapist, created this healing style. Reiki is administered by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that unseen “life force energy” flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one’s “life force energy” is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

How does Reiki work?

  • We have a life force energy flowing through us called Ki. This energy flows through the physical body through pathways called chakras, meridians and nadi’s. The free and balanced flow of healthy Ki is the cause of well-being. It is Ki that animates the physical organs and tissues as it flows through them. Ki nourished the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions.

  • When the flow of healthy Ki is disrupted, it causes diminished functioning within one or more organs of the physical body. Unhealthy Ki, also called byoki, attaches itself to organs or tissues depending on the location of the blockage.

When a person receives Reiki, the Rei or spiritually conscious park of the energy passes where the person has byoki and then directs the healing energy and works with the negative thoughts and feelings that have created the byoki and are blocking one’s flow of healthy Ki.

  • By flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy, Reiki raises the vibratory level in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. Reiki clears, straightens, and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing healthy Ki to flow in a natural way.
